WorkWise: Dress & Sensibility

Mon-Oct 19, 2009

Dressing for work can mean different things for different people.

Life is much easier for a factory worker, who has one set pair of overalls to sport while on the job.

The propensity to err is way higher in a regular office setting, wherein one has to carefully maneuver his/her way out of any tricky situations that may arise from time to time.

Though every place has its own specific code of dressing – spoken or unspoken – the basic Dos and Don’ts still remain the same when it comes to office fashion.

So ladies, I will now list for you the top five cardinal rules of dressing for work:

Low and behold: Wearing a dress with a plunging neckline might have helped Rachel of “Friends” secure her dream job at Ralph Lauren, but trust me when I say that you do not want to be at the receiving end of the kind of attention that brings to one at work.

Deep necklines are a strict no no if you want your peers to attribute some intelligence to you, or treat you with even a smidgen of respect.

Not the sneakers! Floaters, sneakers, skids – name any and I will gladly shoot down the idea right at its outset. The office is no place to sport this category of footwear. If comfort is what you lust after, invest in a good pair of soft flats to help your feet breathe easy.

Short and not so sweet: Barely there hemlines are not the way to go if you are looking to impress at an official presentation. Cute and flirty, the essential nature of mini-skirts renders them inappropriate for the workplace.

Unless catcalls is all that you are looking for, save these for a fun night out with pals.

Save it for the gym please: No. It is not okay to wear track pants to work, even if you are coming in straight from the gym or working the graveyard shift. It is blasphemous to sport these in office even on a weekend. These pieces of clothing are designed for a specific purpose and it is important for us to respect that.

Rein-in the bling: Chunky jewellery and too much of it is sure to sound the death knell for a dignified official presence. Try wearing minimal but elegant neck pieces. The idea is for the jewellery to embellish one’s appearance and not overshadow it.

To put it in a sensible, succinct manner - keep it simple when it comes to deciding upon your wardrobe for the office. Couple elegance with a confident smile and you are sure to go far in the corporate world.
