MOVIE REVIEW: Singh is Kinng
RATING: * * *
CAST inorder of significance: Akshay Kumar, Om Puri, Kirron Kher, Javed Jaffery, Neha Dhupia, Sonu Sood, Katrina Kaif, Ranvir Shorey
Akshay Kumar surely is a crowd puller or may be the palette of the Indian movie goer salivates at the thought of a comedy. Whether it is one of the reasons or both, Singh is Kinng saw jam packed shows most of Friday with audience in the premier classes of movie halls whistling, hooting and clapping every few minutes. But there are a few spells in between where the movie drags and gets boring
First to get the record straight, there is nothing controversial about Singh is Kinng. There is no attempt to either demean a particular community or elevate it. What the package brings, is effortless humour packed in theth Punjabi terms, quite fathomable to everyone, and simplicity that topples over to buffoonery making you laugh your gut out.
The movie gets you laughing almost from the opening scene where a turban clad-bearded Sikh, Happy Singh (Akshay Kumar) is chasing a hen. The song Bhootni Ke is also extremely funny but a word of caution here is a must for non-punjabis who may either not completely understand it or get offended by it thinking of it as laden with vituperative. But what one needs to understand here is that, the aim of the director is to show the pind in all its originality and the happy-go-lucky and carefree-footloose attitude of Punjabis.
There will be times, when the movie will stop happening for you and will look a bit of a drag. This is only because you’re looking out for non-stop comedy since you’ve tasted its omnipresence in the initial half of the film.
Most of the movie has been shot in Australia, and it is there that characters of Sonu Sood, Kirron Kher, Javed Jaffery and Neha Dhupia emerge. Ofcourse there is Katrina Kaif, who looks endearing as always but should really get down to doing something about her accent. For how long is the audience expected to forgive her for roles that show her as an NRI.
Whether it is calling Parathas the national breakfast of Punjab or calling cornflakes, Doodh and Chivra, Akshay Kumar plays his part with utmost ease proving his versatility but also somewhere asserting his mastery and comfort with roles that show him as a typical villager.
Om Puri yet again shows the comfort with which he can do any role, and I mean any role. Kirron Kher is also great in her role and rattles off things in Punjabi. Ranvir Shorey is a little tight and strangely so. Javed Jaffery is cute too and adds his own comic charm to the film. Neha Dhupia somewhere appears more significant in the film due to her performance than Katrina Kaif, even though it is Kat who is the leading lady of the film. Sonu Sood will get noticed in the film though he doesn’t play much of a role. But because he is present throughout the movie, his recollection value is bound to grow.
Happy endings with lots of reformation for criminals through interesting humour and some silly action, Singh is Kinng passes the test of the Box Office.
