Art is the proper task of life. German philosopher Friedrich Nietzsche
sure knew what he was talking about when he uttered those famous words.
The pursuit of and devoted veneration to art is no mean task, and Stefan Prakash Eicher is a living example of the same.
Stefan is a firm believer in the concept of transformational art. His
form of art is the one that transcends the physical, and lends a sense
of completion to one’s inner being.
Gallery Collage:* Girl Interrupted: Collection of paintings on female foeticide * Disparity & Divisions: Collection of paintings on social inequality * In The Name of God: Collection of paintings on communal violence * White Noise: Art workshops for differently-abled and the marginalized * Culture Of Distress: Collection of paintings on violence against women
It was this unwavering belief in his discipline that led him and a
bunch of inspired artistes to come together in the year 2004 for
workshops, wherein they discussed the various manifestations of art –
its power as a tool of change and its unflinching ability to make
people think.
These annual workshops soon acquired a sense of direction, and thus in
the year 2008 was born the novel initiative called the
Reflection Art
Gallery & Studios.
Tucked away in Shahpur Jat, a cozy and creative corner of elite South Delhi, Reflection is not a mere art galleria.
Championing the cause of the marginalized, striving to lend a voice to
those who have been rendered voiceless by the society and provoking
creative introspection of the self are all part of what Stefan terms as
Reflection’s Outreach Program.
The unique initiative is a self-sustained unit, which has tie-ups with
various city NGOs like the Hazard Centre and the Catalyst in order to
help them take art to the masses.
Working to highlight pressing social issues like female foeticide and
violence against women,
Reflection also holds regular workshops with
street kids, slum dwellers and destitute.
The idea is to provide them with a mode of expression, says Stefan.
Apart from all these and many more philanthropic initiatives,
Reflection also runs various residency programs for budding artistes.
Suitably christened “Creative Conscience”, their annual workshop brings together amateur and professional artists who share not just friendship, but a deep love of art and human dignity.
The fraternity gets together to celebrate,
revel and pay obeisance to the muse of creative expression.
On a weekly basis, the gallery hosts people from all walks of life on
“Creative Fridays” – an event that boasts of an open studio, comes
armed with a plethora of colors and promises to provide you ample
intellectual stimulation.
“Where the spirit does not work with the hand, there is no art,” opined
the legendary Italian painter and sculptor Leonardo Da Vinci.
And rightly so, as an unshakable spirit and an earnest effort to herald
change and transformation is what seems to sustain Stefan and his
fellow artistes in this singular pursuit of theirs.
