Nandigram / Press Trust of India

A 12-hour bandh was being observed at Nandigram on Monday in protest against the killing of a CPI(M) activist by Trinamool Congress supporters on May 23.

The Marxists are also observing bandh all over East Midnapore. Shops were closed and vehicles, including rickshaws and vans, were off the roads, official sources said.

Officer in-charge of Nandigram police station Debasish Chakravarty said that no untoward incident was reported till afternoon.

The CPI(M) activist, Khaled Sk, was killed when he was returning from work at a factory in Haldia on May 23.

Meanwhile, Trinamool Congress leader Abu Taher on Monday reiterated his demand for unearthing of arms from Khejuri, a CPI(M) stronghold adjacent to Nandigram.

CPI(M) leader Ashok Guriya also said that efforts should be made to seize the arms stockpiled in the area for restoring peace.

Police said initiative was being taken to seize illegal arms from the area.

An all-party peace meeting had failed to yield results in the absence of Trinamool Congress and SUCI representatives.
