No-trust motion against Speaker or govt likely?

Fri-Jul 25, 2008

New Delhi / Press Trust of India

Having won a confidence motion for the party-led coalition at the Centre, Congress expects a no-confidence motion either against Speaker Somnath Chatterjee by Left parties or the against government by main opposition BJP in the next session of Parliament.

A senior party leader said on Friday that the ruling party would not be surprised if Left parties, angered by the defiance of Chatterjee who has been expelled from CPI-M, move against him.

Besides, they reckon that main opposition BJP, mauled in the recent trust vote, could even try for a no trust vote.

But a no-trust motion against the government is possible only if the monsoon session of Parliament beginning August 11 is held as a separate session and not as part of the just-concluded 14th session of the Lok Sabha.

Meanwhile, Congress President Sonia Gandhi on Friday thanked party leaders who had played a key role in the number mobilisation effort ahead of the trust vote.

Besides Chief Ministers of Maharashtra, Arunachal Pradesh and Haryana, the meeting was attended by some AICC General secretaries including Prithviraj Chavan who is in charge of party affairs in Karnataka.

Parliamentary Affairs Minister Vayalar Ravi and Minister of State for Parliamentary Affairs Pawan Kumar Bansal and V Narainsamy were also present.
