Romancing the stones at 'Gargoti'Tue-Sep 22, 2009 New Delhi / Megha Sharma The intention was enormous; the end seemed a dream...and the way to realize it, formidable. But, realized it was and very successfully so. Set amid a sprawling area enroute from Nasik to Sinnar, the privately-owned Zeolite and mineralogical museum is the only one of its kind in the South Asian region , housing one of the largest mineral collections in the world. Inaugurated on 26th April 2001, “Gargoti” is the progeny of mineral collector and founder of Superb Minerals India Pvt Ltd, Mr KC Pandey. A man of humble beginnings and spiritual leanings, Mr Pandey’s fascination with rocks dates back over 30 years. A self-made man, his multi-crore empire today bears witness to years of hard work and persistence. Snapshots: A walk through Gargoti Breathtaking Zeolites In layman’s terms, Zeolites can be defined as igneous formations that have cooled over the years. A treasure trove of natural history, “Gargoti” is full of these stupefying specimens of nature’s divine bounty. Its imposing structure of the is divided into two prime galleries - The Deccan Plateau, which has on display the best of Indian finds - and The Prestige Gallery, which hosts the choicest pieces of Mr Pandey’s collection. Glittering Aquamarine, luminous Topaz, colorful Apophyllites and many more such unique specimens reveal a whole new world that lies hidden beneath the Earth’s surface. The value of these internationally vaunted-for geological delights is yet to fully dawn upon the Indian collector. As Mr Pandey puts it, our country is home to a huge untapped reservoir of mineral bounty that has so far sadly escaped the focus of governing authorities as well as the masses. Gargoti Museums is, in the meanwhile, striving to spread awareness in this regard by expanding outwards. A recently-opened Earth Wonders Gallery at the Rajiv Gandhi Handicrafts Bhawan in Connaught Place, New Delhi, and an under-construction branch of “Gargoti” at Shirdi form the initial rungs of expansion plans of an empire, which by the looks of it is all set to enthrall the entire country in the years to come. Any true connoisseur of beauty or a lover of nature cannot afford to miss taking a glimpse of these natural wonders, and hence a visit to “Gargoti” is highly recommended for all of you who would want to initiate a lasting romance with these ravishing rocks.
