Mon-Jun 09, 2008
Vienna / Associated Press
UEFA is promoting a charity initiative of the Red Cross that encourages fans to support their team at the European Championship and help land mine victims in Afghanistan.
In a program labeled "Score for the Red Cross," people can buy virtual goals online that will cost $1.58 each and a ranking system will show which Euro 2008 team has the most generous fans.
UEFA will donate $6,300 for each goal scored to the cause, which has Portugal winger Cristiano Ronaldo as its ambassador.
The Red Cross has six centers in Afghanistan and the funds raised will go toward helping land mine victims in their rehabilitation.
