Platini bats for Spain ahead of Euro 2008 final

UEFA President Michel Platini said on Saturday that he hopes to hand over the Euro 2008 winner's trophy to Spain, a team that Platini and his team France defeated in the 1984 finals.

The Frenchman also stressed that UEFA will take a final decision in September as to whether Poland and Ukraine will be eligible to host the 2012 European Championship tournament.

He also observed that Sunday's final between Spain and Germany would be between two deserving teams - before the Frenchman even went on to pick his personal favourite in the final.

"That's what i was thinking this morning while I was shaving. Well, I took it away from the Spaniards 24 years ago. Maybe I'll hand it back to them tomorrow or Sunday night. That's strange, but that's life, isn't it?"

While Platini spoke highly about the success of the Austria- Switzerland co-hosted event, the media have reported widely about UEFA's concerns about Poland and Ukraine hosting the 2012 championships.

Journalists in Poland and Ukraine have reported that UEFA is considering moving the event to either Italy or Scotland.

Platini yet again clarified UEFA's position on Euro 2012, while at the same time requesting the media in Poland and Ukraine not to over-react.

"People in your country are perhaps talking a bit too much about it and should be a bit more restrained. We are going to see and take a decision in September.

"I say we have probably done everything, and may be more than our utmost. To hold the tournament in Poland and Ukraine was a decision of our Executive Committee - and we will respect that decision unless there is a disaster. As I said the two stadia in the two capitals are not finished, then that is a sine quo non."

The UEFA President was also asked about his point of view on increasing the number of teams to 24 in the European Championships. Presently only 16 teams qualify for the finals, with many high-profile teams including England missing out on Euro 2008.

Platini said UEFA will continue the debate on this, while making clear his personal opinion.

"Teams like England, Denmark, Scotland, Ireland, Belgium, Serbia, Ukraine, Bulgaria: have they got the technical skills to participate in a Euro? Would that reduce the quality of Euro: I believe so, yes."

Platini will present the trophy to the winning team after Sunday's final at the Ernst Happel Stadium in Vienna, Austria. The Frenchman is also expected to unveil the 'Player of the tournament' on Monday.
