CPI(M) mulls action against defiant Somnath

Ignoring CPI(M) demand that he should step down, Lok Sabha Speaker Somnath Chatterjee on Monday presided over the special session debating the government's confidence motion, and the party hinted at action against him.

The veteran parliamentarian, who has made it clear that he does not want the Speaker's office to be dragged into political controversy, chaired a meeting of floor leaders of various parties shortly before Lok Sabha met to consider Prime Minister Manmohan Singh's confidence motion.

Ending speculation that he may step down before the House debates the motion, the 79-year-old Marxist leader occupied the Speaker's Chair at 11 am, telling members that he had no subject of his own except to run the House.

The CPM made no secret of its unhappiness and Politburo member Sitaram Yechury said that a "decision" in the matter would be taken at an "appropriate time."

Yechury pointed out that the matter had been discussed in the Central Committee which had authorised the Politburo to take an "appropriate decision" at the "appropriate time."

Indicating that no action will be taken during the two-day Lok Sabha session, Yechury said, "We will not involve the Speaker's office while Parliament is in session."

The fact that the left parties are participating the debate in the Lok Sabha being presided over by Sri Somnath Chatterjee is acceptance of the fact that the Speaker is not toeing the line of the left parties and if the left parties are opposing the Speaker continuing as such and not accepting the stand of the left parties that the Speaker should step down is in fact a tacit support to the UPA government's stand on the nuclear deal. In that event the entire exercise of the present session of Parliament is a farce as it is a foregone conclusion that the left parties would support the nuclear deal as it does not want to align with the BJP and thus the people of this country for a ride. If the above is not true then, the left parties participation in the debate is a no confidence motion against the Speaker rather than it being against the central government. In any case the left parties should either not participate in the debate in the Lok Sabha as long as the Speaker does not step down or bring a motion of no confidence against the Speaker. If the left parties do neither they are supporting the central government rather than opposing it, which in any case is a fact and the entire withdrawl of support by the left parties is only a farce without there being any serious attempt to bring the central government down. Why do the politicians of this country indulge in such farce is a question which the people of this country would suitably reply at the time of the next elections.
