In widespread condemnation of terror strikes that hit the city of Ahmedabad on Saturday, political leaders slammed terrorist organisations' effort to destabilize the country.
Even as the Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and President Pratibha Patil criticized the day's happenings in the strongest terms, various political leaders came out in to urge for calm amid the high tension situation.
"Such acts of terrorism intend to disturb the peace and harmony in the country and should be thwarted," said Vice President Hamid Ansari.
CPM Politburo too condemned the bid to terrorize the country. "Coming so soon after the blasts in Jaipur and Bangalore, it is clear that there is a conspiracy to destabilise the country and create communal disharmony.'' it said.
UPA chairperson and Congress President Sonia Gandhi condemned the killing of innocent civilians and termed the blasts an "act of desperation with a view to disturb the peace and harmony in the country".
Urging for calm
Meanwhile, Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi condemned the attack and called for calm. He claimed that the law and order situation in the state was satisfactory.
Union Minister of State for Home, Sri Prakash Jaiswal termed the attack as being aimed at disrupting communal harmony and hurt India's economic growth.

“I would demand the president's assent to the state laws of Gujarat and Rajasthan akin to the Maharashtra Control of Organised Crime Act (MCOCA) pending with the (central) government. The Gujarat law has been pending for the last four years,” senior BJP leader L K Advani told reporters.
“I cannot draw any conclusions. The law has been pending for many years and to approve it should be our immediate response,” said Advani, who represents the Gandhiagar cosntituency, which includes parts of Ahemdabad.
“The anti-terror legal framework of the government has been weakened after the repealing of the POTA (Prevention of Terrorism Act). The alacrity with which the government should have responded to the anti-terror elements has not been there," said the leader of the opposition in the Lok Sabha.

Union Minister of State for Home, Sri Prakash Jaiswal termed the attack as being aimed at disrupting communal harmony and hurt India's economic growth.
"This is a time when we should not allow anybody to make use of these blasts to
create more terror and to create more difficulties for the people.
"This is a time when we should not feel frightened and we should assess the situation correctly and try to help the people, who have suffered and plan to see that these things do not happen afterwards," said Home Minister Shivraj Patil.

BJP President Rajnath Singh also condemned the blasts in Ahmedabad and blamed the UPA government for its "soft approach" to control terrorism.
"During the past four years, nearly 5,000 sleeper modules have come into existence in almost all parts of the country. The government has failed to dismantle these as it lacks the political will to deal with the growing menace of terrorism," Singh said.
He, however, refused to comment on the fact as to why after Karnataka on Friday, another BJP-ruled state Gujarat was targetted.
"I don't want to associate it with party politics. This is a national problem, but because of vote bank politics, no national law has been formed to fight terrorism," he said.
