Cricket: 9/11 anniversary may postpone Champions Trophy
Sun-Jul 27, 2008
Karachi / Press Trust of India
The Champions Trophy in strife-torn Pakistan is likely to be pushed back by a day to September 12 as the organisers are wary of starting the eight-nation event on the anniversary of the deadly 9/11 terror attack on United States.
Sources told PTI that due to coincidence with the September 11 attack, the start of the mega-event would be delayed by a day and the secretariat of the tournament at Lahore has been informed about this.
"Some of the members of the ICC believe that September 11 would not be an auspicious date for launching the event and it might well be delayed by a day," a top PCB source said.
The secretariat, however, is moving ahead full steam with its preparations and had already prepared the official brochure for the tournament and were finalising the media handbooks.
The secretariat has been told to keep a low profile although earlier they had planned a few media events to highlight the tournament, said Event Director Ahmed Farooq.
The secretariat, which is manned by a staff of 31 including seven managers, three media venue coordinators, one brand executive and 11 lower staffers, is responsible for publication of some 600 media handbooks and 8000 souvenirs besides the tournament brochure.
