BJP, Congress bicker as terror looms large

Wed-Jul 30, 2008

New Delhi / Press Trust of India

Angry over BJP leader Sushma Swaraj's charge suggesting that the government was involved in the recent serial blasts, the Congress went on the offensive on Wednesday demanding that she should be tried for "treason."

Congress spokesman Shakeel Ahmed, who is also the Minister of State for Home, told PTI that "Swaraj should be tried for treason" and charged her of "helping" terrorists by her statement.

The party also alleged that the BJP has given a clean chit to the terrorists by making such statements.

Swaraj had, on Monday, alleged that "the blasts are a conspiracy to divert attention from the cash-for-votes scandal" as the incidents took place just a few days after the government won the trust vote.

When asked if she was alleging that the Congress-led UPA government had a role in the blasts, she said that "I am not saying that the government is behind this. I smell a conspiracy in it. I have already told you about the two objectives of that conspiracy."

Demanding that the BJP immediately disown and condemn the statement, Congress spokesman Abhishek Singhvi said the saffron party by the remarks has given "clean chit to every terrorist... and to those who foment problems in the country."

Attacking the party, Singhvi told reporters that "BJP has exhibited outrageous irresponsibility and blatant opportunism in accusing the central government of organising blasts to divert attention from issues arising out of the trust vote."

The spokesman said the accusation would have been called "comic" had it not been made on such a serious issue.

"It shows that BJP has no faith in itself and India. They are insecure and opportunistic, ready to insult India and the Indians," added Singhvi.

Launching a frontal attack on the party, Singhvi said with such accusation the BJP has made India the "laughing stock" of the world.

"Imagine a situation where the Tories accuse the Labour Party for the London blasts and vice versa," said Singhvi, adding, "BJP continues to commit treason by not condemning the statement."

The Congress accused the BJP of "destabilising" the country and said the party was indulging in "cheap political gimmickry."

The BJP, meanwhile, seemed to be distancing itself from Swaraj's remarks, maintaining that the statement made by her last week were her personal views.

"From the official (party) platform, I am saying that what Sushmaji said was her personal view and what Advaniji said in Ahmedabad on July 27 is the party position," BJP Spokesperson Prakash Javadekar said.

Advani had said during his visit to Ahmedabad that the blasts were "not an attack on one political party or one particular state. It is an attack on the nation."

However, Javadekar did hit out at the reported statement by Minister of State for Home Sri Prakash Jaiswal in Kanpur on the blasts in Ahmedabad.

"Jaiswal said yesterday in Kanpur that the blasts were a result of the riots in Gujarat. We condemn this statement and demand an apology from the Minister," he said.
