Nobody can stop me from becoming PM: Mayawati

Sat-Aug 09, 2008

Lucknow / Press Trust of India

Unfazed by the failure of efforts to pull down the UPA government that may have pitchforked her into national centrestage, Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Mayawati on Saturday said that "nobody can stop her from becoming Prime Minister".

In a show of strength a fortnight after the attempt in Parliament floundered, the BSP leader addressed a huge gathering of her party workers and supporters and a surprise presence in the stage was that of suspended Congress leader and former External Affairs Minister K Natwar Singh.

Singh and his son Jagat Singh, an expelled Congress MLA in Rajasthan, are expected to join the BSP.

"If I can become chief minister of UP four times why cannot I become the Prime Minister. If people from sarv samaj (all castes) continue to support the BSP nobody can prevent her from becoming the Prime Minister," she said addressing the party's National Workers Convention in Lucknow.

Mayawati accused the "casteist" forces, UPA and NDA, of conspiring against her before trust-vote in parliament so that "a dalit cannot become PM".

"I am proud of taking birth in a dalit family. My life is a struggle and I will continue to work for dalits and poor throughout my life", she said striking an emotional chord with the party workers.

Taking on Cong

Alleging that oppoistion parties were trying to malign BSP government in the state, she cautioned party workers to remain alert against any propaganda against her government.

On the disproportionate assets case, Mayawati alleged that Congress used the media to highlight that she had a lot of wealth and property and added "she has crores of rupees gifted to her on her birthday by her well wishers and partymen".

"I have paid 30 per cent tax to the income tax department", she said adding that those especially Congress were making it an issue but it would have no affect on her as her supporters knew the reality.

Apprehending her arrest before Lok Sabha elections, Mayawati alleged that Congress might get chargesheet filed against her by CBI in the disproportionate asset case and send her to jail to gain political mileage.

"Even if they do so (send her to jail) the partymen will remain behind me and ensure that BSP will become stronger", she said.

Taking potshots at the Congress, Mayawati said that the party only made a propaganda of eradicating poverty but did nothing except promoting industrialists and making them richer.

"Earlier Indira Gandhi then Rajiv Gandhi had made a call for poverty eradication and now it is yuvraj (Rahul) is doing the same", she said.

Referring to Rahul Gandhi's address in parliament on July 22 in which he mentioned a poor lady Kalawati, Mayawati said that it was a sheer drama.

"Rahul in his address defended the nuclear deal giving example of Kalawati claiming that deal would help in providing employment and improving life of the poor", she said adding that it was a false propaganda of Congress.
