Two sent to custody in 1993 Mumbai blasts case

The special TADA court on Sunday remanded two persons deported from Nepal, to judicial custody till Monday in connection with the 1993 Mumbai serial blasts.

Special TADA Judge D U Mulla remanded the two persons- Riyaz Khatri and Ashfaq Ahmed Shah alias Salim Ghazi to judicial custody after the CBI stated that it needs to reconfirm the identity and role of the two arrested accused. 

Khatri and Shah were deported from Nepal late Saturday night and were brought to Mumbai. Both are suspected to be key aides of underworld don Dawood Ibrahim and have been a part of the conspiracy of 1993 serial blasts.

"The CBI needs to confirm the identity of the two persons as both of them are claiming to be someone else," special public prosecutor Ujwal Nikam told PTI.

Both the arrested accused were in Interpol's Red Corner list of wanted accused. The two had been staying in Kathmandu for a long time in the guise of businessmen dealing in handicrafts.

The serial blasts in Mumbai on March 12, 1993 left 257 people dead and injured over 700 others.
