Wed-Oct 08, 2008

Udalguri, Assam / Press Trust of India

The toll in violence-hit Udalguri and Darrang districts on Wednesday rose to 52 with the recovery of the body of a woman.

Tension had been brewing in the districts following group clashes between illegal Bangladeshi immigrants and indigenous people since Friday last.

No major incident of violence was reported today with the Army and para-military forces patrolling the affected areas.

Official sources said the police today recovered a body of a 40-year-old woman belonging to the minority community at Basbari along the Dhubri-Kokrajhar border close to the affected villages of Udalguri and Darrang districts.

Eleven bodies were found from several villages of the twin districts on Tuesday.

Meanwhile Minister of State for External Affairs E Ahamed will visit the affected areas today to take stock of the situation.

At least 80,000 people are sheltered in the relief camps set up by the government for violence victims, sources said.
