NHRC issues notice to Assam govt

Tue-Oct 14, 2008

New Delhi / Press Trust of India

Taking suo-motu cognizance of the communal flare up between Muslims and Bodo tribe in Assam, the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) on Tuesday issued a notice to the state government and decided to sent its investigation team to the affected areas.

Acting on a media report that about 30 people were killed in communal clashes between migrant Muslims and Bodos, the Commission has asked the Chief Secretary and Director General of Police to submit a report in the matter within four weeks.

The NHRC has also decided to sent its investigation team to the affected areas in the state to study the situation in relief camps.

"If the contents of the press report are true, then these raise serious issue of violation of human rights of victims," the NHRC said. Quoting the media report, the Commission said that over 60,000 people have taken shelter in relief camps.

Meanwhile, asserting that all victims of the communal violence at Udalguri and Darrang districts were 'genuine Indian citizens', Assam Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi said on Tuesday that the clashes took place at the behest of vested interests.

"During my visit to the relief camps in the affected areas I have not come across a single foreign national," Gogoi said in a statement, reacting to reports that the clashes took place between Bangladeshi migrants and indigenous people.

Denying media reports attributed to him that there were no illegal Bangladeshis in Assam, Gogoi clarified that he had only said the recent clashes were between members of two communities and the question of infiltrators from the neighbouring country does not arise.

Opposing the claim of BJP president Rajnath Singh that Bangladeshi nationals were involved in the clashes, Gogoi said if such was the case then "why did not the previous NDA government at the Centre take effective steps?

"We have taken effective steps to curb infiltration by fencing the border and updating the National Registrar of Citizens...My government is committed to protect the territorial integrity of the state," he said.

It is ironic that NHRC sustained by the Indian Tax payers money, is so worried about illegal immigrants.
And how can we expect truth from Mr Gogoi and his likes? They are all holding on to power with the votes of these illegal immigrants.Refer to the reports filed by the governor of Assam, few months ago.As per this report, there is daily influx of 6000 Bangladeshis in Assam!

Assam, Bihar and West Bengal are sitting on tinderbox.NHRC should not try and fish in such troubled waters.
