Two paramilitary troopers and many civilians were injured in a clash in Srinagar on Tuesday when protesters pelted stones demanding removal of a Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) unit in an uptown area of Srinagar.

The stone pelting protesters clashed with the security forces in Maisuma area in the heart of city centre Lal Chowk of summer capital Srinagar on Tuesday afternoon.

Police used batons and fired tear smoke canisters at the protesters who kept on regrouping from lanes and bylanes in the area.

Several people, including civilians and security persons, were injured in the clash. The protesters were demanding removal of the CRPF unit posted in Maisuma area.

"Two CRPF troopers were injured in the stone pelting by the protesters and two of our vehicles have been extensively damaged," Prabhakar Tripathi, CRPF spokesperson told reporters.

Shopkeepers in the area alleged that angry CRPF troopers damaged their merchandise and beat them up, even though they had not been part of the protesting mob.

Personnel commit suicide

Meanwhile, an officer and a jawan of the CRPF allegedly committed suicide in separate incidents in the strife-torn state when they shot themselves with their service rifles.

With this three personnel from this para-military force have ended their lives in the last four days.

The jawan identified as Raju pulled the trigger on himself while on duty at Ghrota area in the outskirts of Jammu city on Tuesday afternoon, official sources said.

On hearing the shot, other jawans and policemen rushed to the spot and took him to a hospital where he was declared brought dead, the sources said, adding the reason behind his taking the extreme step was not yet known.

CRPF authorities have ordered an enquiry into the incident.

On Monday night, Jaimal Singh, a sub-inspector of 164th CRPF battalion too committed suicide in a similar manner inside a camp at Kokernag in South Kashmir. A CRPF jawan had committed suicide in Kashmir valley on February 6.

Stress is believed to be the main cause for personnel in the para military forces ending their lives.
