Trains cancelled, diverted in Howrah-Chennai route

The Southern Railway on Saturday announced cancellation of various trains in the Chennai-Howrah route following the derailment of the Howrah-Chennai Coromandel Express in which nine passengers were killed and 62 injured.

Howrah Mail scheduled to leave Chennai Central and Coromandel Express scheduled to leave Howrah on Saturday and Sunday morning respectively has been cancelled, a Railway release said.

Besides them, various trains including Chennai Central- Howrah Mail, Dibrugrah-Chennai Egmore Express, Thiruvananthapuram-Shalimar Express, Guwahati-Ernakulam Express, Patna-Ernakulam Express, Howrah-Mysore Express have been diverted, the release said.

A special train with 23 coaches which left for Howrah for the stranded passengers of the derailed Coromandel Express would arrive in Chennai Central around 4 am on Sunday, it said.

In order to clear the extra rush, three additional sleeper coaches would be attached to Kanyakumari-Howrah Express and one to Thiruvananthapuram-Howrah Express, the release added.

2842 Chennai-Howrah Coromandel Express, 8478 Haridwar -Puri Kalinga Utkal Express, 2837 Howrah-Puri Express and 5640 Guwahati-Puri Express and 8409 Puri-Howrah Shri Jagannath Express would also be diverted via Cuttack-Angul-Sambalpur City-Jharsuguda and Rourkela.

The 8646 Hyderabad-Howrah East Coast Express, 6323 Thiruvananthapuram-Shalimar Express, 2704 Secunderabad- Howrah Falaknuma Express, 2839 Chennai-Howrah Mail would be diverted via Vizianagaram-Rayagada-Titlagarh-Sambalpur-Rayagada and Rourkela.

Similarly, 2863 Howrah-Yeshvantpur Express, 2508 Guwahati -Ernakulam Express, 6310 Patna-Ernakulam and 0803 Howrah -Mysore Special Train, 8048 Vasko-da-Gama-Howrah Amaravati Express and 2664 Kanyakumari-Shalimar Express would run via Kharagpur-Nagpur-Balharsa and Vijaywada stations.

The 2840 Chennai-Howrah Mail would be diverted via Vizianagaram, Titlagarh and Raipur stations on Saturday instead of its normal path, the release said.

It said 2891 Baripada-Bhubaneswar Express would be short terminated at Soro and would return back as 2892 Bhubaneswar -Baripada Express from there. The 234 Brahmapur- Bhadrak passenger would be short terminated at Cuttack and would return back as 233 Bhadrak-Brahmapur Passenger from there.
