Security to witnesses of the post-Godhra riots topped the agenda of the Special Investigation Team's (SIT) meeting, sources said on Monday.

SIT chief R K Raghavan was in Ahmedabad on Monday to discuss the further course of action with his team which include IPS officers Geetha Johri and Shivanand Jha.

He was also accompanied by two new members of the SIT -- former additional director of CBI Paramveer Singh and former DIG, CBI, A K Malhotra, who were recently inducted into the team after former DG of Uttar Pradesh C B Satpathy opted out.

State Director General of Police (DGP) S S Khandwawala joined them to discuss various security issues related to the witnesses in the cases.

"Since trials of the 2002 riots cases will begin in different districts of the state, I was called to discuss the security of the witnesses outside as well as inside the courtrooms," Khandwawala told PTI.

"We have assured them to provide all kind of security," he said.

Khandwawala added that all arrangements for security of witnesses would be made as per SIT's needs.

The meeting of the SIT members continued till late in the evening in the agency's office located in the old secretariat building.

Besides the witnesses' protection, other issues that were discussed during the day-long meeting included appointment of public prosecutors for the fast-track courts set up to conduct trials in the post-Godhra riot cases on day-to-day basis, sources said.

The matter has been pending since over three weeks after the apex court ordered setting up of fast-track courts for conducting trial of riot cases.

The meeting also discussed the course of investigation into latest assignment entrusted upon the agency by the Supreme Court to probe within three months the role of Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi, his cabinet colleagues, police officials and senior bureaucrats in the post-Godhra riots in the state in 2002.

The probe against Modi and others follows a complaint by Zakia Jaffrey, whose husband ex-MP Ehsan Jaffrey was killed during the 2002 riots in Gulbarg society.
