Life in Kashmir valley was paralysed for the sixth consecutive day today due to the separatist-sponsored strike to protest the deaths of two women, whose family members are on hunger strike to demand action against the guilty.

As the situation remained tense, police and paramilitary personnel patrolled the deserted streets of Srinagar and major towns of the Valley to maintain law and order.

The hunger strike is being staged since Thursday to demand that culprits behind the alleged rape and murder of the two women in Shopian, 50 kms from here, be brought to book.

Normal life has been affected as government offices, banks, educational institutions, courts and semi-government institutions besides markets remained closed in response to the strike called by hardline Hurriyat leader Syed Ali Shah Geelani.

The strike will continue till tomorrow.

Shops and business establishments were closed and transport off the roads in Anantnag, Baramulla, Budgam, Bandipora, Kupwara, Ganderbal, Pulwama, Shopian and Kulgam.

Bodies of Nelofar (22) and her sister-in-law Asiya (17) were recovered on Saturday last after they went missing from their orchards in Shopian on the previous day sparking off massive protests in the Valley despite a judicial inquiry ordered into the case.
