India, Pak Foreign Secretaries likely to meet
Mon-Jun 29, 2009
New Delhi / Press Trust of India
Foreign Secretaries of India and Pakistan are likely to have a bilateral meeting in the Egyptian resort city of Sharm-el Shaikh on the sidelines of the NAM Summit next month to discuss the issue of terrorism.
The exact details, including date for the meeting between Foreign Secretary Shivshankar Menon and his Pakistani counterpart Salman Bashir, are being worked out by the two countries, sources said here today.
The Foreign Secretaries have to meet before the meeting between Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and his Pakistani counterpart Yusuf Raza Gilani on the sidelines of the July 15 NAM Summit at Sharm-el Shaikh.
Both Menon and Bashir will be in the Egyptian from July 11 for the preparatory meetings of the NAM.
Sources said there is a possibility of their meeting on the sidelines of the multilateral Summit but details are yet to be finalised.
The Foreign Secretaries are to meet in accordance with the decision reached between Singh and Pakistan President Asif Ali Zardari in Yekaterinburg in Russia on June 16.
Singh and Zardari had decided that the Foreign Secretaries will meet to discuss what Pakistan has done to dismantle terror infrastructure on its soil and in bringing to book the perpetrators of Mumbai attacks.
The Foreign Secretaries will then report their deliberations to their political leadership and Singh and Gilani will take stock of it before deciding on future course of bilateral relations.
India has made it clear that bilateral relations cannot improve till Pakistan shows progress in prosecuting perpetrators of Mumbai attacks.
India suspended composite dialogue with Pakistan after the Mumbai attacks which were carried out by elements based in that country.
New Delhi has underlined that it is not averse to holding dialogue with Islamabad but an appropriate atmosphere has to be created for it.
The Prime Minister has promised to meet Pakistani leadership "more than half the way on road to peace" if it demonstrates "determination" and "courage" to fight terrorism that affects India.
