Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit who presided over the first meeting of Delhi State Population Commission reviewed the various aspects of the National Population policy and decided to formulate a policy that would exclusively focus on the demography of the national capital.

"It was decided to formulate Delhi State Population Policy after deliberations of sub-groups on various themes and discussion in a seminar, if required," said Chief Secretary Rakesh Mehta who also attended the meeting.

He said while population was not that much of an issue of concern as that of skewed sex ratio which is around 890:1000 in areas like South Delhi. National Policy calls for a separate State Level Population Commission and State Population Policy.

Total population of Delhi accounts for 1.34 percent of all India population with only 0.05 percent of total area of the country. Delhi has the highest population density of 9,340 people per sq km, according to an official release.
