In a surprising discovery about where higher life can thrive, scientists for the first time found a shrimp-like creature and a jellyfish frolicking beneath a massive Antarctic ice sheet.

An iceberg about the size of Luxembourg, that struck a glacier off Antarctica and dislodged another massive block of ice, could lower the levels of oxygen in the world's oceans, Australian and French scientists said on Friday.

Changing wind patterns linked to global warming are altering the food chain in Antarctica and may lead to further increases in greenhouse gases in the atmosphere.

This year's ozone hole over Antarctica was the fifth biggest on record, reaching a maximum area of 10.5 million square miles in September, NASA says. That's considered "moderately large," NASA atmospheric scientist Paul Newman said in a statement.

Antarctica, which seemed to have largely escaped the global warming affecting the rest of the planet, is melting too, according to a study.
