Sania-Chia ousted from women's doubles

Already out of singles competition, Sania Mirza's doubles campaign also ended after she and her partner Chia-Jung Chuang suffered a straight set loss to Alla Kudryavtseva and Monica Niculescu in the second round of the Wimbledon Championships in London on Saturday.

The 15th seeded Indo-Taipei pair lost 2-6 3-6 to the unseeded Russian-Romanian combination.

Sania and Chia had their chances but failed to grab on those. Out of seven break points they got they could convert just one and paid the price.

Sania's singles campaign was cut short in the second round by her friend Sorana Cirstea.

The Indian would now look to put up a better show in the mixed doubles event as she has reached the second round with compatriot Mahesh Bhupathi.

Paes-Dlouhy crashes out, Sania in doubles 2nd round

In a major upset, French Open champions India's Leander Paes and Lukas Dlouhy of Czech Republic crashed out of the Wimbledon men's doubles even as Sania Mirza and Chia-Jung Chuang battled hard to make it to the second round in women's doubles, in London on Thursday.

Paes and his Czech partner went down to the unseeded US pair of James Blake and Mardy Fish 4-6, 4-6, 3-6 that brought an end to their campaign in the first round itself.

However, there was some cheer for India as Sania and her Chinese Taipei partner defeated Americans Jill Craybas and Carly Gullickson 6-4, 6-2 following a 79-minute battle.

Lot was expected from Paes and Dloughy after their triumph in the French Open early this month.

However, the third-seeded Indo-Czech duo failed to match their American opponents and went down in one hour 49 minutes.

The third-seeds paid for 11 double faults and 12 unforced errors compared to their rivals' one.

They also converted just three of the 19 breakpoints while Blake and Fish's converted six of the 12.

Sania and Chuang faced stiff competition from unseeded Craybas and Gullickson in the first set.

The 15th seeded Indo-Taipei pair had to wait till the eighth breakpoint of the fourth game to get their first break.

The Americans saved seven back-to-back breakpoints but the effort wasn't enough against their equally unrelenting rivals.

However, the compliment was returned in the next game as Americans converted their second chance.

Sania and Chuang were, however, unfazed and broke their rivals at love in the sixth game to get back the lead.

But the Americans regrouped and broke their fancied rivals once more to remain in contention.

The seeded pair relied on its experience to brake Craybas and Gullickson at love in the 10th game to wrap up the first set.

The gruelling fight entered the second set and both the pairs continued the entertaining tussle.

But this time, Sania and Chuang dominated and broke their rivals in the sixth and eighth games to march to the second round.

They next face the winners of the match between Lourdes Dominguez Lino/Aranta Parra Santonja and Alla Kudryavtseva/Monica Niculescu.

Sania Mirza and Chia-Jung Chuang fought valiantly but lost a tough semifinal battle to crash out of the euro 3,500,000 Madrid Open, going down in straight sets against third seeds Kveta Peschke and Lisa Raymod in Madrid.

The unseeded Indo-Taipei pair pushed their opponents to limits before losing 6-7 (4) 4-6 to the Czech-American pair in one hour and 26 minutes, on Friday night.

Sania and Chuang squandered seven breakpoints in the match while saving three.

Their opponents were more successful in cashing in on the chances as they converted six out of nine breakpoints.

Sania earlier had failed to make it to the main draw of the singles event after losing the first round qualifying match.

Sania Mirza and her partner Chia-Jung Chuang advanced to the semifinals of the $4,500,000 Madrid Open after Russian-Belarussian duo of Victoria Azarenka and Elena Vesnina conceded their quarterfinal match in Madrid.

The unseeded Indo-Taipei duo were leading 2-0 in the first set when their opponents pulled out due to an injury in Azarenka's left knee.

Sania-Chuang will next face third seeds Lisa Raymond of the US and Kveta Peshke of Czech Republic in the last four stage.

The other semifinal will be played between top seeds Cara Black of Zimbabwe and American Liezel Huber and the fourth seeded Australian pair of Samantha Stosur and Rennae Stubbs.

Sania had earlier failed to make the cut into the main draw of the singles event after losing 3-6, 3-6 to Aravane Rezai of France in the first round qualifiers.

Sania Mirza and her Taipei partner Chia-Jung Chuang moved to the doubles pre-quarterfinals of the euro 3,500,000 Madrid Masters after defeating wildcards Ma Emilia Salerni and Silvia Soler Espinosa in straight sets.

Sania-Chuang defeated the Argentine-Spanish pair 6-3 6-4 in their opening match. They will next take on the second seeded pair of Anabel Median Garrigues and Virginia Ruano Pascual, who got a bye in the first round.

Sania could not make it to the singles main draw as she lost the first round of the qualifying event to France's Aravane Rezai 3-6 3-6.
