Doha round
With the US not taking any active interest, the Doha Round of trade talks, which began almost a decade ago to open global commerce, is likely to again miss the 2010 target of concluding the deal.
The head of the World Trade Organisation warned on Wednesday that talks to forge a new global trade agreement have to speed up if a deal is to be reached next year.- The two-day meeting of 35 trade ministers of the WTO-member countries began in New Delhi on Thursday with India underscoring the need to strengthen the multilateral regime to boost global trade.
UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon has voiced concern over the effects of the collapse of the Doha round on the developing and poor countries, hoping the talks resume before the end of the year.- Indian Trade Minister Kamal Nath, speaking for more than 30 developing countries, insisted that he wasn't willing to sacrifice the "livelihood of poor and subsistence farmers" for the sake of a deal.
