Doha trade talks
India along with China and Brazil have come to enjoy a "new level of influence" in the WTO and would be expected to accept greater responsibilities in the global trade deal under Doha negotiations, the US has said.
The two-day informal talks beginning Thursday in New Delhi will be attended by WTO Director General Pascal Lamy and ministers from rich and emerging nations with sharp differences on issues such as farm subsidies and tariffs on industrial products.
The world could grow richer by as much as $ 300-700 billion annually from a successful completion of the Doha round of trade talks and India could see more than $ 32 billion in trade gains.
The US bids to deepen a strategic partnership with India -- viewed as a global player on trade, arms control and climate change -- when Secretary of State Hillary Clinton visits Friday.- "We live in times when the people are anxious. This economic challenge cannot be resolved by waiting and watching," Indian Commerce Minister Anand Sharma said in Washington on Thursday.
