Seven labourers died of suffocation in an oil factory in the Kakinada district of Andhra Pradesh, while the condition of one is critical. The accident occurred while cleaning a tanker at the oil factory in Ragampeta village of Peddapuram Mandal on Thursday. The police have registered the case.
Officials said that around 9.30 am, the labourers were asked to check the defunct tanker of Ambati Subbanna Oil Factory. Redappa first entered the tanker through the manhole. Three other labourers got into the tanker when he did not respond for some time. When he had trouble breathing, he started shouting for help.
After this, three more labourers got into the tanker to save them, but all fainted after being hit by the poisonous gas. After this, Shivakumar Reddy went downstairs. He also started having trouble breathing, so he started crying. After this, all the labourers were taken out and taken to the nearby government hospital, where doctors declared 6 of them brought dead. The 7th labourer died during treatment. At the same time, Shivakumar Reddy (43) was transferred to Veluru in Tamil Nadu.
The deceased have been identified as M Ramesh (32), G Govinda Swamy (35), B Ramachandra (23), A Redappa (30), R Babu (30), Keshav (20) of Ayyam Reddy Palle and B Venkata Rajulu (23). happened in the form Five of the dead are from Paderu in Alluri Seetharama Raju district, while two are from Pulimeru village. All of them had joined the job ten days ago. According to sources, this oil factory was not registered under the Factories Act. It is feared that all these deaths have occurred due to poisonous gases.
District fire officer V Srinivas Reddy said the hatchery did not have a NOC from the fire department. Police have registered a case under section 304A (causing death by negligence). The state government has announced a compensation of Rs 10 lakh to the families of each deceased, while the company has agreed to pay an ex-gratia of Rs 15 lakh.
