Former Lok Sabha MP and BJP leader Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh stirred controversy on Sunday by likening former Haryana Chief Minister Bhupinder Singh Hooda and his family to the Pandavas from the Mahabharata. Singh’s comments came in response to recent political developments involving wrestlers Vinesh Phogat and Bajrang Punia joining the Congress party.
Singh’s Comparison to the Pandavas
In his remarks to the media, Singh drew a parallel between the historical Pandavas, who faced enduring scorn despite their trials in the Mahabharata, and the Hooda family. Singh stated, “During the Mahabharata, Draupadi was gambled away and the Pandavas lost. The country has still not forgiven the Pandavas for this. Similarly, the Hooda family by compromising the dignity of our sisters and daughters will also not be forgiven in the future. They will always be seen as guilty for this.”

Singh’s comments were aimed at highlighting his ongoing feud with the Hooda family and the Congress party, which recently gained prominence due to the political shift involving prominent wrestlers.
Wrestlers Join Congress Amid Controversy
The backdrop to Singh’s comments includes the recent high-profile entry of wrestlers Vinesh Phogat and Bajrang Punia into the Congress party. Singh accused their move of being part of a larger conspiracy orchestrated by the Congress, with former Haryana Chief Minister Bhupinder Singh Hooda allegedly masterminding the efforts.
The wrestlers had previously led a major protest against Singh in 2023, alleging that he had sexually harassed several female wrestlers during his tenure as the Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) chief. This protest had significantly impacted Singh’s political standing and had drawn widespread media attention.
Congress’s Political Strategy and Candidate List
In a strategic move for the upcoming Haryana assembly elections, Congress has fielded Vinesh Phogat as its candidate for the Julana constituency in Jind district. Phogat’s entry into politics marks a significant shift, and she has been actively campaigning and engaging with voters.
Phogat’s Response to Singh’s Accusations
During a recent campaign event in Julana, Vinesh Phogat addressed Singh’s accusations and defended her position. “Whatever I have won in wrestling, it was because of people. Hopefully, I will be successful in this as well. I will talk about the wrestlers’ protest at Jantar Mantar later, BJP had allowed us to sit there. Brij Bhushan is not the country, people are standing with me, they are my own. My own people have supported,” Phogat said.
She also spoke about her personal challenges and her dedication to overcoming them. “I will succeed in all the wars. The pain of not getting a medal had lessened as I arrived at the airport in India. I have been facing challenges,” she added.
Ongoing Legal and Political Battles
Singh also addressed his ongoing legal issues, noting that he is involved in three major cases currently under judicial review. He emphasized that his statements are recorded on camera and suggested that as legal proceedings unfold, the opposition will find it difficult to comment on the situation.
