Airtel Launches AI Solution to Block Spam Calls

Airtel Launches AI Solution to Block Spam Calls

Bharti Airtel is gearing up to introduce artificial intelligence-enabled technology to reduce spam calls and messages across its network, according to the company’s Managing Director and CEO, Gopal Vittal. The new technology will be implemented starting midnight on September 26 and is designed to alert users about potential spam calls and messages.

AI-Driven Spam Detection

Speaking on the new development, Vittal highlighted that Airtel has developed a cutting-edge AI-based spam detection solution. “We have identified spammers using several indicators. Our AI technology can analyze calls within 2 milliseconds and notify users through their phone dialer,” he explained.

Free for All Airtel Smartphone Users

The AI-based solution will be available at no additional cost to all Airtel smartphone users. Vittal further added, “Our system processes 1.5 billion messages and 2.5 billion calls daily, allowing us to detect 100 million potential spam calls and 3 million spam SMSes every day.”

Users to Decide on Blocking Spam Calls

The technology will provide notifications for suspected spam, but the decision to block calls will remain with the users. Vittal acknowledged that “false positives”—cases where legitimate calls are flagged as spam—may occur. Therefore, the system does not automatically block calls, leaving the final decision to the users.

While the technology aims to curb spam within Airtel’s network, Vittal admitted that it does not cover spam calls made through over-the-top (OTT) platforms such as WhatsApp. “Spam calls on OTT apps remain a challenge that we haven’t yet been able to solve,” he said, acknowledging the persistent issue.
