Kerala CM Pinarayi Vijayan Mourns Sitaram Yechury’s Death

Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan expressed profound sorrow over the passing of Sitaram Yechury, the former General Secretary of the Communist Party of India (Marxist) [CPI(M)]. Speaking at a memorial meeting, Vijayan praised Yechury’s remarkable ability to connect with people across diverse linguistic and cultural backgrounds, highlighting his significant role in major movements throughout the country.

Contributions to Key Movements

During his address, CM Vijayan emphasized Yechury’s pivotal contributions to vital national movements, including the farmers’ protests. “Yechury played a decisive role in several major movements in the country. His ability to comprehend the broader picture of the nation was invaluable,” he stated, noting that Yechury’s insights and leadership greatly influenced contemporary socio-political landscapes.

Legacy of Leadership

Vijayan reflected on Yechury’s journey from a student leader to a respected public figure. “From his youth, Yechury’s leadership skills were widely recognized, and he emerged as a beloved figure among the public,” the Chief Minister remarked. His leadership was marked by a commitment to maintaining Left unity, making him one of the leading intellectuals of his time.

Lasting Relationships and Impact

Yechury’s warm relationship with the CPI(M) in Kerala was highlighted, with Vijayan noting that his passing creates a significant void in the party and the broader global communist movement. “His loss is particularly significant in the current political climate of India. It is not only a great loss for the CPI(M) but also for the global communist movement,” he added.

A Life of Activism

Joining the CPI(M) in 1975, Yechury was an outspoken activist, even enduring imprisonment during the Emergency for his political activities. He played an instrumental role in the party’s structure, being elected to various key positions over the years, including the Polit Bureau and the Central Secretariat. In 2015, he became the General Secretary of the CPI(M), a role he held until his demise.

A Respected Parliamentarian

Sitaram Yechury served two terms in the Rajya Sabha from 2005 to 2017, where he earned recognition as an effective parliamentarian, culminating in the best parliamentarian award in 2017. His legislative efforts and debates were characterized by a focus on social justice and progressive policies.

The memorial for Sitaram Yechury serves as a reminder of his enduring impact on Indian politics and society. As Kerala mourns the loss of a dedicated leader, his legacy continues to inspire future generations in their pursuit of justice and equality.
