In a shocking development, Pakistan’s Karachi has seen a significant surge in street crime incidents, with the 100th death reported within 9 months.
This 100th tragic incident took place in Surjani Town, where a 25-year-old factory worker named Faisal was killed while resisting a robbery on Wednesday night. Faisal, the son of Ghulam Shabbir, had just collected his salary and was on his way home when armed robbers confronted him. When he refused to hand over his belongings, the assailants opened fire and fled the scene, leaving Faisal fatally wounded.
This increasing number of such incidents has sparked alarm, as citizens of Karachi continue to fall victim to daily armed robberies and gun violence.
According to reports, more than 700 individuals have been injured in similar attacks, with robbers targeting valuables like mobile phones, cash, and vehicles.
As per data, the city has experienced over 50,000 criminal incidents in the first eight months of 2024, including over 35,000 vehicle thefts, 15,000 mobile phone robberies, 1,173 cases of car snatching, and a concerning number of kidnapping and extortion cases. The figures for September alone indicate approximately 5,000 to 6,000 crimes, with 10 fatalities recorded.
However, despite these alarming statistics, the Citizens-Police Liaison Committee (CPLC) has yet to release the official crime data for September. But, it’s clear that Karachi’s residents are grappling with an escalating wave of crime that already exceed 55,000.
