Jammu And Kashmir Cabinet Urges Centre To Restore Statehood

In a significant move, the Jammu & Kashmir Cabinet, led by Chief Minister Omar Abdullah, has officially passed a resolution calling for the restoration of statehood to the region. This decision emerged during the Cabinet’s inaugural meeting on Thursday, where officials emphasized the urgency of the matter.

According to official sources, the Chief Minister plans to travel to New Delhi in the coming days to present the drafted resolution to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, urging the central government to reinstate Jammu & Kashmir’s statehood. This initiative highlights the ongoing political efforts to address the status of the region, which was bifurcated into two Union Territories—Jammu & Kashmir and Ladakh—on August 5, 2019, following the abrogation of Article 370.

The Cabinet meeting, which was attended by Deputy Chief Minister Surinder Choudhary and several ministers, focused on the resolution’s implications and the government’s immediate priorities. Notably, Congress JKPCC president Tariq Hameed Karra stated that the party would not participate in the J&K Cabinet until statehood is restored, reflecting the political tensions surrounding this issue.

National Conference president Farooq Abdullah expressed optimism regarding the restoration of statehood, referencing discussions that have taken place on the matter. He noted that the Supreme Court has agreed to hear an application seeking restoration of statehood within the next two months, reinforcing his belief that the Government of India would act promptly.

When questioned about the possibility of raising the issue of Article 370 or introducing a resolution against it in the Assembly, Abdullah indicated that further legal discussions would be necessary. He also addressed public concerns during his visit to Lal Chowk, promising an end to the VIP culture on the roads. “There will be no more sirens that irritate the ears of the public. Everyone is equal here, whether locals or politicians; there are no VIPs,” he stated.

The ongoing discussions surrounding the restoration of statehood reflect the significant political landscape of Jammu & Kashmir, where the push for greater autonomy and representation continues to resonate with the local population.
