A terrorist attack has devastated the headquarters of Turkey’s national aerospace company, Tusas, located near Ankara, resulting in multiple fatalities and injuries, according to Turkey’s Interior Minister Ali Yerlikaya. The violent incident, which involved a significant explosion and gunfire, has raised serious concerns about security in the region.
The explosion rocked the Tusas facilities in Kahramankazan at around 4 PM, triggering reports of gunfire in the vicinity. Eyewitness accounts and local news outlets indicate that a hostage situation is currently unfolding, although specifics remain sparse. In a statement shared on X (formerly Twitter), Minister Yerlikaya confirmed the grim news: “A terrorist attack was carried out against the Tusas facilities in Kahramankazan, Ankara. Unfortunately, we have martyrs and injured people.”
Initial investigations suggest that the attack was executed by a group of gunmen who arrived at the scene in a taxi. Footage broadcasted by local television revealed individuals dressed in black, armed and carrying rucksacks, as they opened fire on bystanders. Additionally, images from the site depicted a damaged gate and evidence of clashes in the nearby parking area. Speculations regarding the nature of the explosion hint at the possibility of a suicide attack, although this has not yet been confirmed.
The Importance Of Tusas
Tusas is a cornerstone of Turkey’s defense and aviation industry, recognized for developing the Kaan, the nation’s first indigenous combat aircraft, among other advanced projects. The attack raises alarms, particularly since it coincides with a prominent trade fair for the defense and aerospace sectors taking place in Istanbul. Notably, Ukraine’s top diplomat was among the attendees of this significant event.

In light of the ongoing situation, employees at the Tusas facility have been directed to seek shelter as a precautionary measure. The Turkish defense sector is a critical component of the country’s economy, generating approximately 80% of Turkey’s export revenues. Projected revenues are expected to surpass $10.2 billion in 2023, with the sector’s global reputation largely built on its innovative products, including the renowned Bayraktar drones.
