Maharashtra Polls 2024: Congress Releases 2nd List Of 23 Candidates

The Indian National Congress has released its second list of candidates for the upcoming Maharashtra state assembly elections, which will be held on November 20. This new list features nominees for twenty-three seats, further solidifying the party’s strategy in the face of a competitive political landscape.

Key Nominations

Among the notable candidates in the second list are Dr. Rajesh Tukaram Manvatkar from Bhusawal, Swati Sandeep Wakekar from Jalgaon, and Mahesh Gangane from Akot. Additionally, Anuja Kedar, the wife of disqualified MLA Sunil Kedar, will contest from Savner. Sunil Kedar was recently convicted in a corruption case, leading to his disqualification. Senior leader Girish Pandey has been nominated from Nagpur South, while Lahu Kanade has been replaced in Shrirampur by Hemant Ogale.

This announcement follows the Congress party’s first list, which was released just a day after the Maha Vikas Aghadi, a coalition of the Congress, Nationalist Congress Party (NCP), and Shiv Sena (UBT), revealed its seat-sharing arrangement. Under this formula, each party will contest 85 out of a total of 255 constituencies. Additional seats are earmarked for smaller parties, including the Samajwadi Party, Peasant and Worker Party (PWP), and the Communist Party of India (CPI).

Context of the Elections

The Maharashtra assembly polls are critical for all participating parties, particularly for the Congress, which aims to regain a foothold in the state’s political dynamics. The party’s strategy includes fielding candidates who can resonate with the electorate while navigating the complexities of alliances and the recent political landscape, including corruption allegations against some of its candidates.

Political Significance

The upcoming elections are seen as a litmus test for the Congress party, particularly in a state where it has faced significant challenges in recent years. The emphasis on a diverse range of candidates reflects the party’s intent to connect with various voter demographics while reinforcing its commitment to transparency and accountability.

With the elections approaching, the Congress party is actively working to finalize its candidate lists and bolster its campaign strategies, as it seeks to reclaim influence in Maharashtra’s political arena.
