In a major development on the Brampton protest happening in Canada, Peel Regional Police have suspended Sergeant Harinder Sohi after footage emerged showing him participating in a pro-Khalistan demonstration outside the Hindu Sabha Temple.
The event, which occurred on November 3, quickly drew attention online due to heightened tensions between pro-Khalistan groups and members of the Hindu community. The protest reportedly turned violent, disrupting a consular event jointly hosted by the temple and the Indian Consulate.
Officer’s Participation Sparks Outrage
The incident came to light when a video surfaced on social media showing Sergeant Harinder Sohi, an off-duty Peel Police officer, at the demonstration. The footage depicted him engaging with the protestors, including a moment where he appeared to smile and respond to chants directed against the Indian government.
Eyewitnesses and social media users noted that Sohi was seen holding and waving a Khalistani flag during the protest.
Peel Police Responds to the Incident
Peel Regional Police issued a statement confirming the suspension of Sergeant Sohi. “We are aware of a video circulating on social media which shows an off-duty Peel Police officer involved in a demonstration.
This officer has since been suspended in accordance with the Community Safety and Policing Act,” said Richard Chin, a Media Relations Officer for Peel Police. He added that the department is investigating the circumstances surrounding the video and would provide further information as it becomes available.
