FIR Filed Against Mithun Chakraborty Over ‘Provocative’ Speech

Mithun Chakraborty faces FIR for allegedly making provocative remarks at a BJP event in West Bengal, triggering a political and legal debate.

FIR Filed Against Mithun Chakraborty Over ‘Provocative’ Speech

Actor-turned-politician Mithun Chakraborty has found himself at the center of controversy after a First Information Report (FIR) was filed against him by Bidhannagar Police on Wednesday. The case stems from a speech he made during a BJP event in North 24 Parganas district on October 27, in which he allegedly made provocative remarks. The complaint, filed at Bidhannagar South Police Station, follows a public address by Chakraborty at the Eastern Zonal Cultural Centre (EZCC) in Salt Lake, where he made bold claims about the political future of West Bengal.

Alleged Provocative Remarks

During the BJP event in October, Chakraborty, who was recently awarded the Dadasaheb Phalke Award for his contribution to Indian cinema, declared that the “masnad” (throne) of West Bengal would belong to the BJP after the 2026 Assembly elections. He further pledged that the party would do whatever necessary to achieve this objective, setting the stage for the controversy. The statement, delivered in front of BJP supporters, has raised concerns among opposition parties and local authorities.

Chakraborty’s speech also included a reference to the 2019 Lok Sabha elections, specifically targeting remarks made by TMC MLA Humayun Kabir, who had allegedly made communal comments aimed at BJP workers. Chakraborty cautioned that no one should try to intimidate BJP voters into abstaining from voting in the 2026 Assembly elections. He urged BJP workers, especially at the booth level, to resist any such efforts.

FIR and Investigation

Following Chakraborty’s comments, an FIR was registered under various sections of the Indian Penal Code, including those relating to promoting enmity between different groups and inciting communal tensions. The Bidhannagar Police have confirmed that an investigation is underway, but no further details have been disclosed as of yet.

While Mithun Chakraborty has yet to comment publicly on the matter, the BJP has come out in defense of the actor-turned-politician. BJP state president and Union Minister Sukanta Majumdar slammed the FIR, calling it a case of “vendetta politics” and accused the state government of using the police force for political purposes. He stated that Chakraborty’s remarks were not provocative and argued that the legal action was an attempt to intimidate him.

Political Backdrop and BJP’s Membership Drive

The incident occurred during the launch of the West Bengal leg of the BJP’s nationwide membership drive, an event attended by Union Home Minister Amit Shah. The BJP has been attempting to expand its influence in the state, which has been a stronghold of Mamata Banerjee’s Trinamool Congress (TMC). Chakraborty’s statements, made at a time of heightened political activity in the state, are seen as a bold assertion of the BJP’s ambitions in West Bengal.

Chakraborty, a prominent figure in the entertainment industry, joined the BJP in 2014, marking his transition from a successful film career to active politics. Known for his charismatic persona and outspoken nature, Chakraborty has often made headlines with his strong political statements.

Legal and Political Fallout

The filing of the FIR has escalated tensions between the ruling TMC and the opposition BJP. The TMC has long accused the BJP of attempting to stir communal tensions in West Bengal, a charge the BJP denies. With both parties accusing each other of political maneuvering, this latest incident could further deepen the political divide in the state.

Meanwhile, legal experts suggest that the case against Chakraborty could face challenges in court, as it hinges on whether his remarks can be proven to have incited communal hatred or violence. The investigation by Bidhannagar Police is expected to shed more light on the nature of the speech and whether it violated any legal provisions.

Mithun Chakraborty’s speech has sparked a fresh round of political and legal controversy in West Bengal. With an investigation underway and both the BJP and TMC digging in their heels, it remains to be seen how this case will unfold. As the 2026 West Bengal Assembly elections draw closer, Chakraborty’s statements could be a precursor to the increasingly heated political battles in the state, where both parties are vying for dominance.
