Five young men, aged between 19 and 23, lost their lives, and one sustained injuries when their car lost control and plunged into a lake near Jalalpur village in Bhoodan Pochampally Mandal early Saturday, police said.

The victims were residents of the LB Nagar area in Hyderabad. They were traveling to Valigonda when the accident occurred. The deceased were identified as Vamsi (23), Dignesh (21), Harsha (21), Balu (19), and Vinay (21). The injured victim Manikanth (21), is receiving treatment at a nearby hospital.

The speeding vehicle went off the road and into the lake, according to the police. Authorities were notified by locals, and rescue efforts were carried out. The injured person was rescued and taken to a hospital, but five were immediately pronounced dead.

Preliminary investigations revealed that the victims had reportedly consumed alcohol and left Hyderabad in the early hours to drink toddy in the village, indicating towards drunk and driving case.

Videos from the scene showed police and local residents trying to retrieve the car from the lake. The bodies of the deceased were sent for postmortem and will be handed over to their families after completing legal formalities.

Police have registered a case and are investigating further to determine the exact cause of the accident.
