RG Kar Rape Murder Case Verdict Live Updates: Sealdah Court Set To Announce Sanjay Roy’s Sentence On January 20

The Sessions Court in Sealdah found Sanjay Roy, the prime accused in the RG Kar rape and murder case, guilty on Saturday but postponed the sentencing to Monday. In a closed-door ruling, Justice Anirban Das emphasized the importance of ensuring the safety and security of the accused before sending him back to jail. The court complex was heavily secured, with 300 security personnel deployed, as protests and slogans erupted outside.

What is the RG Kar rape-murder case? On August 9 of the previous year, a 31-year-old junior doctor was raped and murdered at the state-run RG Kar hospital in Kolkata. Her body was discovered in the seminar room. The incident sparked nationwide outrage and extensive protests by junior doctors in West Bengal, calling for justice and enhanced security in government hospitals. The trial began on November 11, three months after the incident. The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), which took over the investigation from Kolkata Police under the Calcutta High Court’s directive, has called for the “maximum punishment” for Roy. The trial concluded on January 9.

'Justice should be done for our doctor,'

Vinay Agrawal, the chairman of the Indian Medical Association's Action Committee, comments on Sealdah Court's decision to declare the RG Kar rape-murder case's verdict today: “Not only we, the entire country is eagerly waiting for the judgment. Justice should be done for our doctor. A lady doctor in a prominent medical college of a prominent state, the oldest medical college, was brutally raped, murdered brutally. And in the government premises, in the hospital premises, when she was on duty, it enraged the entire country, not only the medical profession. You have seen that the entire city was burning, Bengal was burning, and other states were burning. All medical colleges were shut down. Indian Medical Association also gave a call for this thing…Stringent punishment should be given to the accused…”

In an interview to news agency ANI, he said: “Our lawyer and CBI have told us not to go to the court. I have no idea about the recent court proceedings…CBI never called me anywhere, they came to our residence once or twice but whenever we asked them about the investigation, they always said it was underway. There were bites on my daughter’s neck but a swab was not collected from there. In the post-mortem report, there was no concrete evidence. CBI is not trying much. There is someone involved in this…In the DNA report, it can be seen that 4 men and 2 women were present there. We want all the people involved in this to be punished…”
