The officials announced on Saturday that the Project 17A Frigate Taragiri will be launched in Mumbai on September 11.
At Mumbai’s Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders Limited, the launching will take place. The event’s principal guest will be Vice Admiral Ajendra Bahadur Singh, FOC-IN-C, Western Naval Command.
The fifth ship in the Project 17A Frigates fleet is called “Taragiri,” after a Himalayan peak range in Garhwal. These vessels are the P17 Frigates (Shivalik Class) in an upgraded form, equipped with cutting-edge armaments, sensors, platform management systems, and increased stealth characteristics.
A statement from the Ministry of Defence stated, ‘Taragiri’ is the reincarnation of erstwhile ‘Taragiri,’ the Leander Class ASW Frigate, which saw countless difficult missions in its glorious service to the nation spanning over three decades from 16 May 1980 to June 27, 2013.
Seven ships are being built as part of the P17A programme, with four at MDL and three at GRSE. Between 2019 and 2022, two P17A Project ships were launched at MDL and two at GRSE.
Indian Navy’s Warship Design Bureau, the nation’s first institution for all warship design efforts, created the P17A ships internally.
In keeping with the nation’s steadfast efforts to achieve “AatmaNirbharata,” 75% of the equipment and system orders for Project 17A ships are being placed with domestic companies, including MSMEs.
