According to a State Department spokeswoman, the US is worried about China’s alignment with Russia during the Ukraine conflict and is closely monitoring Beijing’s behaviour to determine whether the nation gives any military or sanctions evasion help to Moscow.
“Beijing pretends to remain impartial, but its actions show that it is still investing in tight connections with Russia,” said US spokeswoman on Friday.
Russian President Vladimir Putin and Chinese President Xi Jinping spoke via video connection on Friday about bilateral ties and regional issues. During the call, Putin offered Xi to visit Moscow the next year.
“The US and Europe have warned the PRC (People’s Republic of China) of the repercussions of supplying Russia with military help for its conflict against Ukraine or systematic cooperation with sanctions evasion,” added the spokeswoman .
According to a State Department official, the US is carefully monitoring Beijing’s activities and that those who join with Moscow in this illegitimate conflict will surely find themselves on the wrong side of history.
“The world is watching to see which nations stand up for the fundamental ideals of freedom, self-determination, and sovereignty, and which stand by or implicitly assist Russia in its planned and unprovoked war of choice,” said the spokesman.
This comes after the Chinese President reminded his Russian counterpart on Friday that their nations’ strategic coordination should be strengthened.
According to Xinhua, Xi emphasised that both sides should make full use of existing institutions for expanded economic, trade, and energy cooperation. The Chinese president stated that the world’s second-largest economy is ready to restart normal cross-border travel with Russia and other countries.
