Taking to Twitter, Jaishankar said, “India elected to the highest UN statistical body for a 4-year term beginning on 1 January 2024! Congrats Team @IndiaUNNewYork for coming through so strongly in a competitive election.” He also noted that India’s strength in statistics, diversity, and demographics won it a seat on the United Nations Statistical Commission.

India won easily in the recently concluded UN Statistical Commission election, earning 46 out of 53 votes, trailing opponents ROK (23) China (19) and UAE (15). In a nutshell, India has won.

According to the sources, this was a multi-cornered election, with four candidates competing for two seats.

It is the top decision-making organisation for international statistical activity, responsible for setting statistical standards and developing concepts and methods, as well as their national and international implementation.
