Upon his arrival in Jakarta early on Thursday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi received a warm welcome from the Indian community. PM Modi personally greeted the members of the Indian diaspora who had gathered at the Ritz Carlton Hotel in Jakarta to welcome him, with chants of ‘Vande Mataram’ and ‘Modi Modi’ echoing in the air.
The Indian diaspora exhibited their enthusiasm by waving the Tricolour and enthusiastically chanting slogans like “Modi Modi,” “Vande Mataram,” “Humara Neta Kaisa Ho, Narendra Modiji Jaisa Ho…” (What kind of leader should we have? should be like Modiji), and “Har Har Modi, Har Ghar Modi.” Many children were also among those present in the diaspora.
PM Modi was seen engaging with the Indian community members, including the children, and he graciously took selfies with them. One member of the Indian Diaspora expressed, “He (PM Modi) is such a prominent leader, yet he is so approachable; he shook hands with all of us and spent time with each one of us…” Others acknowledged that India’s growing recognition is largely attributed to PM Modi.
PM Modi’s visit to Indonesia was in connection with his attendance at the 18th East Asia Summit and the 20th ASEAN-Indian Summit. He received a ceremonial welcome at Jakarta International Airport and was welcomed by I. Gusti Ayu Bintang Darmawati, Minister for Women Empowerment and Child Protection. An Indonesian cultural dance performance added to the welcoming ceremony’s cultural charm.
Before departing for Indonesia the day before, Prime Minister Modi expressed his eagerness to engage in discussions with fellow leaders on practical cooperation measures to collectively address global challenges. He highlighted the significance of India’s engagement with the ASEAN group as a crucial aspect of India’s ‘Act East Policy.’ PM Modi’s visit to Jakarta was made possible by the invitation of Indonesian President, Joko Widodo.
PM Modi outlined his agenda, stating, “My first engagement will be the 20th ASEAN-India Summit. I look forward to discussing with ASEAN leaders the future contours of our partnership, which has entered its fourth decade. Engagement with ASEAN is an important pillar of India’s ‘Act East’ policy. The Comprehensive Strategic Partnership entered into last year has injected new dynamism in our ties.”
He further mentioned, “After that, I will be attending the 18th East Asia Summit. This forum provides a useful opportunity to deliberate on issues of importance to the region including food and energy security, environment, health, and digital transformation. I look forward to exchanging views with other EAS Leaders on practical cooperation measures to collectively address these global challenges.”
PM Modi is set to return to New Delhi on Thursday evening ahead of the G20 Summit, scheduled for September 9 and 10.
