Bangladesh’s Prime Minister, Sheikh Hasina, has arrived in the national capital, New Delhi, to participate in this year’s G20 Summit hosted by India. Minister of State in the Ministry of Textiles and Railways, Darshana Jardosh, welcomed her at the Delhi Airport.
India and Bangladesh share deep-rooted bonds of history, language, culture, and numerous commonalities. This partnership has evolved into a model for bilateral relations in the region and beyond, strengthening and maturing over time.
India was the first country to recognize Bangladesh as a separate and independent state, establishing diplomatic relations immediately after its independence in December 1971. The connection between the two countries extends to civilizational, cultural, social, and economic aspects.
Last month, India and Bangladesh held their fifth Annual Defence Dialogue in Dhaka, agreeing to enhance their defense cooperation, including increasing bilateral exercises. Additionally, a two-day Joint Group of Customs (JGC) meeting was conducted in New Delhi, focusing on customs cooperation and cross-border trade facilitation.
In September last year, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina met Prime Minister Narendra Modi to review and strengthen the relationship between the two countries, resulting in the signing of seven MoUs during her visit to India.
Prime Minister Modi also made a State Visit to Bangladesh in March 2021, commemorating the Golden Jubilee of Bangladesh’s Independence, the Birth Centenary of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, and 50 years of diplomatic relations between India and Bangladesh.
Furthermore, External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar and Bangladesh PM Sheikh Hasina attended the inaugural session of the 6th Indian Ocean Conference in Dhaka on May 12, 2023.
India is currently hosting the G20 Leader’s Summit in New Delhi at the newly inaugurated Bharat Mandapam on September 9-10. The summit boasts the participation of more than 30 heads of state, top European Union officials, invited guest countries, and 14 leaders of international organizations.
