Israeli authorities have disclosed that in July, they intercepted 16 tons of materials intended for making rockets, which were being smuggled through the Ashdod port. The containers initially believed to contain sacks of gypsum, weighed a total of 54 tons and had arrived from Turkey with Gaza as their final destination.
During the inspection process conducted by Ashdod Customs and the National Cargo Inspection Center at Customs, suspicions arose about the contents of the containers. Subsequent laboratory testing confirmed that 16 tons of ammonium chloride had been concealed within the gypsum.
Ammonium chloride is a substance with dual-use capabilities, known for its utilization by Gaza-based terror groups in the production of rockets. When combined with fuel, ammonium chloride can serve as a rocket propellant. Notably, 16 tons of this substance would be adequate to manufacture a significant number of rockets.
Since Hamas took control of Gaza in 2007, both Israel and Egypt have enforced a blockade on the region to curb the smuggling of weapons. Consequently, terrorist organizations like Hamas and Palestinian Islamic Jihad have resorted to producing their own rockets, often with the support of Iran.
