Bengaluru: Metro’s Purple Line to Begin from Oct 9

Bengaluru Metro’s Purple Line, also known as the Whitefield-Challaghatta Metro corridor will become fully operational from Monday, October 9. However, this expansion will take place without an official inauguration ceremony by PM Modi, as per a directive from the Prime Minister’s Office.

The newly opened sections include the 2.1-kilometer Baiyappanahalli-KR Pura and the 2.05-kilometer Kengeri-Challaghatta segments, which are part of the Purple Line, stretching from Whitefield in the east to Challaghatta in the west, covering a total distance of 42.85 kilometres.

A communique posted by PC Mohan on X stated, “PM Narendra Modi Ji has instructed BMRCL to throw open services on the new stretches of the purple line (Challaghatta to Kengeri and Baiyappanahalli to Whitefield) on an immediate basis and without delaying the operations to hold any formal inauguration ceremony with a VIP presence.” This decision reflects a commitment to reduce VIP culture and prioritize public interest.

The communique also highlighted Prime Minister Modi’s significant contributions to Bengaluru’s development, including approvals for the Suburban Rail, the rapid approval and construction of the STRR (Satellite Town Ring Road), the expansion of Namma Metro Phase 2A and 2B, the addition of electric buses under the FAME-II scheme, and the expansion of Kempegowda International Airport with a new terminal (T2). These infrastructure projects are expected to improve the city’s transportation and enhance the quality of life for its residents.

On the occasion of the Purple Line’s expansion, the three Members of Parliament representing Bengaluru—DV Sadananda Gowda, PC Mohan, and Tejasvi Surya—expressed their gratitude to Prime Minister Narendra Modi for his “invaluable contribution” to the city’s development and continuous support for Bengaluru.
