The Enforcement Directorate (ED) carried out search operations at 13 sites in Delhi connected to Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) legislator Amanatullah Khan and his associates under the provisions of the Prevention of Money Laundering Act, 2002 (PMLA).
The searches were executed on Tuesday as part of an investigation into the illegal recruitment of staff in the Delhi Wakf Board and alleged personal gains through the improper leasing of its properties during Amanatullah Khan’s chairmanship from 2018 to 2022, according to a press release from the ED.
The ED initiated its inquiry based on an FIR filed by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) under various sections of the Prevention of Corruption Act, 1988, and the Indian Penal Code, 1860.
The ED disclosed that it is also investigating three additional FIRs registered by the Delhi Police as the role of Amanatullah Khan and his associates came under scrutiny.
According to the ED, its investigation has revealed that Amanatullah Khan has accrued significant proceeds of crime from these activities, which were subsequently invested in various immovable properties in Delhi under the names of his associates.
During the search operations, the ED claimed to have seized incriminating records and evidence in both physical and digital forms, pointing to the involvement of AAP MLA Amanatullah Khan in money laundering.
Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal challenged Prime Minister Narendra Modi to provide evidence of AAP leaders’ involvement in any scams, asserting that the raids were part of a plan to undermine the AAP.
In response to the searches at his residence, Aam Aadmi Party MLA Amanatullah Khan stated that the ED did not present an FIR as the basis for the raids. He described the lengthy search at his house and the health issues faced by his family during the operation.
These searches at AAP MLA Amanatullah Khan’s premises followed the recent arrest of fellow AAP leader and Rajya Sabha MP Sanjay Singh in connection with the “Delhi excise policy scam.”
