Trinamool Congress (TMC) MP Mahua Moitra, currently under investigation for ‘Cash for Query’ charges, has once again voiced her disapproval of the Lok Sabha Ethics Committee on social media. Following the submission of the committee’s report recommending her expulsion to the Speaker, Moitra shared a satirical cartoon on her ‘X’ account, captioned, “Maintain ethics unless you are on the other side.” The cartoon depicted Moitra beside an empty chair adorned with the lotus, the BJP’s symbol, insinuating a lack of ethics on the ruling side.
The Lok Sabha Ethics Committee submitted a draft report on Friday, proposing Moitra’s expulsion in connection with the ‘Cash for Query’ case. The committee’s 500-page report, adopted with a 6:4 majority, cited Moitra’s conduct as “highly objectionable, unethical, heinous, and criminal.” Moitra had walked out of the committee meeting during cross-examination, alleging that members were asking her personal questions.
In response, BJP MP Nishikant Dubey dismissed Moitra’s claims, asserting that it was Opposition MPs who posed inappropriate questions. Moitra’s cartoon has been perceived as a direct attack on the Ethics Committee and its handling of the investigation.
The ‘Cash for Query’ controversy arose when BJP MP Nishikant Dubey accused Moitra of targeting the Adani Group in Lok Sabha questions in exchange for gifts from businessman Darshan Hiranandani. The Ethics Committee’s report, recommending Moitra’s expulsion, has stirred further controversy within the political sphere.
