Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced on Friday that India, committed to the UN Framework for Climate Change process, aims to host COP33 in 2028. Speaking at the opening ceremony of the High-level segment of COP28 in Dubai, PM Modi highlighted India’s progress in balancing ecology and economy, asserting that the country is on course to meet its Intended Nationally Determined Contribution (NDC) targets.
“India is committed to the UN Framework for Climate Change process. That is why, from this stage, I propose to host COP33 Summit in India in 2028,” said Prime Minister Modi, emphasizing the nation’s commitment to global climate efforts.
Despite being home to 17 percent of the world’s population, India’s contribution to global carbon emissions remains less than 4 percent, showcasing a remarkable balance between population size and environmental impact, according to PM Modi. He reiterated India’s dedication to achieving its NDC targets, positioning the country among the few economies making tangible progress in combating climate change.
PM Modi arrived in Dubai on Thursday to attend the World Climate Action Summit as part of the Conference Of Parties-28 (COP28). This summit provides an opportunity to review the progress made under the Paris Agreement and chart a course for future climate action.
Before departing for Dubai, PM Modi highlighted India’s commitment to climate action, citing achievements in renewable energy, energy efficiency, afforestation, energy conservation, and the Mission LiFE initiative.
During his visit, PM Modi will participate in three high-level side events, two of which are co-hosted by India. The first event, co-hosted by India and the UAE, will launch the Green Credits Initiative, building on the Green Credit Programme initiated by the Ministry of Environment in October. The second event, co-hosted by India and Sweden, will introduce LeadIT 2.0, a Leadership Group for Industry Transition.
In the three decades since the Rio Summit, the COP has convened annually to address climate challenges. COP21 led to the Paris Agreement, mobilizing global efforts to limit the global temperature increase and adapt to existing climate change effects. As India proposes to host COP33 in 2028, it signals the nation’s proactive role in shaping the future of global climate action.
