Extending her warm wishes to the citizens on Goa Liberation Day, President Droupadi Murmu paid heartfelt tributes to the freedom fighters who played a pivotal role in this significant chapter of the state’s history. Taking to her official social media platform on X, President Murmu expressed, “On Goa Liberation Day, the nation honors the martyrs who made the ultimate sacrifice for the liberation of Goa from colonial rule. We commend the exemplary courage and sacrifice of the freedom fighters and our armed forces. I extend my best wishes for a prosperous future to the residents of this beautiful state.”
Observed annually on December 19, Goa Liberation Day commemorates the historic moment in 1961 when the Indian Army liberated the state from 450 years of Portuguese rule. Goa Chief Minister Pramod Sawant also took to the micro-blogging platform to acknowledge the sacrifice and valor of the state’s freedom fighters and the armed forces. He posted from his official X handle, “On this historic Goa Liberation Day, I salute the supreme sacrifice of our freedom fighters who valiantly fought to free Goa from oppressive colonial rule. I commend the Indian Armed Forces for their decisive action with Operation Vijay. The liberation struggle, born out of determination, fills our hearts with promise and hope as we unite to build a ‘Bhangrale Goem’ for the generations to come. Heartiest wishes to the people of Goa on the momentous occasion of Goa Liberation Day.”
Governor of Goa, PS Sreedharan Pillai, also joined in paying homage to the soldiers who laid down their lives to liberate Goa from colonial rule. Governor Pillai shared on X, “Today is Goa Liberation Day. On December 19, 1961, Goa was liberated from the Portuguese and became an integral part of India. Let us pay our homage to all those who laid down their valuable life for the freedom of Goa.”
