EAM Jaishankar: Dominant Entities Craft Systems to Seem Fair, Despite Actual Fairness

External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar underscored the global power dynamics and the significance of influencing narratives to establish equitable systems. Discussing the division of power on the global stage, he noted that those in dominance often shape systems to appear fair through negotiation and narrative manipulation, especially evident in bodies like the UN Security Council. During the launch event of the book ‘India’s Moment’ by former Indian Ambassador Mohan Kumar, Jaishankar elaborated on the challenges in achieving true free trade, citing instances of selective approaches in sectors like food, clothing, drugs, and intellectual property.

Addressing the audience, Jaishankar emphasized the crucial role of narratives in shaping perspectives and understanding. He expressed satisfaction at participating in the book release event, praising the insights offered by the author on issues like the WTO and climate. Further, Jaishankar stressed the need to evaluate economic growth’s contribution to India, urging a focus on deepening strengths in manufacturing and technology.

Reflecting on the ongoing considerations for Free Trade Agreements (FTAs), Jaishankar defended the cautious approach, stating that decisions on FTAs carry significant implications for millions of Indians and their livelihoods. He called for a judicious assessment of both merits and risks, particularly given India’s per capita income and the presence of small producers. Dismissing criticism over delays in signing FTAs, including with the UK, Jaishankar urged an understanding of the complexities involved, asserting that each step taken represents an achievement and requires careful consideration.
